The GeoIT WhereCamp Conference is a premier conference focusing on the latest trends and insights around digital mapping, navigation and local intelligence within the GeoIT domain since the foundation in 2012 by Philipp Kandal, Jan Nowak and Prof. Dr. Roland Wagner after a meeting at the second O’Reilly Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco in spring 2012 and the second Wherecamp after Stanford in 2011 in San Francisco. It’s called an “unconference” because the agenda is set on the spot, in a spontaneous, collaborative way. Attendees post their ideas, take the initiative, and lead sessions—whether talks, discussions, or workshops. Surprisingly, this flexible approach works remarkably well! The unconference model was especially effective during periods of rapid change, like 2008-2014, when mobile computing was emerging, and individuals were pioneering new applications. However, as the IT/GeoIT platform expanded and larger teams began collaborating on these growing applications, the need for a more structured conference format emerged. This led to demand for a traditional setup with a Call for Participation, a predefined agenda, and more organization.

We’re not kidding, we are just crazy! Crazy about GeoIT, geography, innovation, research and the huge fun around location topics. We are experiencing everyday how rapidly the world is changing. For example paper maps existed for centuries, but in the last 15 years it’s all about digital ones. So we would like to talk all the interesting stories around that process. Whether it’s finding what makes a neighborhood unique, mapping your vacation destinations, or finding the most relaxing bike-route through the city? We are providing an environment for sharing ideas, collaborate and thinking differently.

In 2015 the Society for Geoinformatics established a colloquium series addressing young researchers and PhD students. Under the acronym GeoIT GISCO a GISience COnference has been created, allowing young scientist to exchange their findings, establish new cooperations and expand their personal network. Experienced researchers and professionel scientists from various international universities support the GeoIT GISCO participants.

The first GeoIT GISCO 2015 has been held in November 2015 at Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg. That event was hosted by former GfGI (Gesellschaft für Geoinformatik).

GeoIT GISCO will not only address PhD students; however, the idea is providing a platform to connect young researchers and bring them together with advanced scholars from various scientific fields. Thus, initiating new networks and/or strengthening already established networks is the background idea of GeoIT GISCO.
